Background
Further to Council Resolution 16/27 adopted in March 2011 at the Human Rights Council, the Council requested the Advisory Committee to undertake a number of projects, including on the relationship between malnutrition and childhood diseases.
Preliminary Study
The study, prepared by Jean Ziegler, on behalf of the drafting group on the right to food of the Human Rights Council's Advisory Committee (read the study) discusses the intersection between malnutrition, childhood disease and human rights, taking children affected by Noma as an example.
In 2010, approximately 171 million children globally were stunted and 20 million severely wasted. About 1 million children die directly every year from severe acute malnutrition. Moreover, malnutrition is thought to contribute to one third of the eight million deaths of children under-five every year.
Contribute to the Study
The Council is inviting UN Member States, UN agencies and all other relevant stakeholders to submit views and comments on the prelminary study by 14 October 2011.
