BOTSWANA: Children's Ombudsperson

Summary: Information about institutions in Botswana that monitor children's rights.

Children's Ombudsperson

The Office of the Ombudsman (http://www.gov.bw/en/Ministries--Authorities/Ministries/Office-of-the-Ombudsman-of-Botswana/) was established in 1997 and is empowered to receive complaints and make recommendations for remedial action. However, in its Concluding Observations of 2004, the Committee on the Rights of the Child expressed concern that the Office lacked the necessary human and financial resources to function effectively and at the lack of awareness of the role of the Ombudsman, particularly among children.
