BAHRAIN: Report on the condition of the rights of the child

A report on the condition of the rights of the child in Bahrain, by the Bahrain Youth Society for Human Rights. The 10- page focuses on a number of children's rights issues and rights in the Kingdom of Bahrain, such as the children's religious freedom, their right to citizenship,freedom of expression, their right to form associations, protests and gather, and the right to protection from arbitrary arrest and torture.

Recommendations:

1) to issue a child code based on the convention of the rights of the child, specified for the protection of the child at the legislative level as well as in practice;

2) to allow children from other sects- other than Sunni- access to education that is consistent with their sects teachings and to allow them to express their religious opinions inside and outside the educational institution; 

3) to amend the Bahraini citizenship law of the year 1963 to correspond with article 7 of the convention in order to give children of Bahraini mother and foreign father the right to choose between the two nationalities, and not to discriminate in granting citizenship on bases of religion or race;

4) to amend the law of establishing societies of the year 1989, in accordance with the conventional and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, in order to allow children to form child- led organizations, and not to impose control on activities run by children;

5) to allow children to discuss political and social issues freely on websites and internet forums;

6) to educate the state's institutions, specially the State Security, the rights of the child, allow children their right to protest and gather, and not to expose them to arrest and torture;

7) to invite the special rapportures on the rights of the child to visit Bahrain and meet with civil society organizations and the bodies working on children's rights and protection, and

8) to commit to the recommendations of the universal periodic review.
