AUSTRALIA: Children's Ombudsperson

Summary: Information about institutions in Australia that monitor children's rights.

Children's Ombudsperson

Children's Commissioners or independent guardians have been established in all Australian states and territories alongside a National Children's Commissioner at the federal level. In its Concluding Observations of 2012, however, the Committee on the Rights of the Child expressed concern that the National Children's Commissioner was not adequately funded to realise its mandate, particularly with regards to its “effective capacity to fully and promptly address and remedy complaints from or for children”. The Committee also expressed concern at the inadequacy of representation of aboriginal persons and Torres Strait Islanders in the existing child rights monitoring mechanisms.
