ARGENTINA: Children's Ombudsperson

Summary: Information about institutions in Argentina that monitor children's rights.

Children's Ombudsperson

Responsibility for monitoring children's rights falls within the powers of the National Ombudsman for the People (Defensoría del Pueblo de la Nación Argentina). Since the introduction of Law No. 26.061 (2005), a position has existed for an Ombudsman for Boys, Girls and Adolescents, though as of April 2008, no appointment had been made to the role, and the Committee on the Rights of the Child urged the State to appoint a suitable candidate for the position as soon as possible. Individual provinces are also empowered to set up their own Ombudspersons for Children, as Córdoba has done and Corrientes is in the process of doing.
