ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA: Children's Ombudsperson

Summary: Information about institutions in Antigua and Barbuda that monitor children's rights.

Children's Ombudsperson

There is an Ombudsman's Office in Antigua and Barbuda, but the Committee on the Rights of the Child expressed concern in its 2004 Concluding Observations that there was no independent mechanism with a specific mandate to monitor and evaluate the progress on the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The Committee recommended that the State create such a body empowered to receive and address individual complaints from, or on behalf of, children, and provide this body with sufficient human and financial resources to fulfil its function.
