AFRICAN COMMISSION: Mentions of Child Rights in State Party Reports

African States which have ratified the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child are obligated to report to the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child on measures they have taken to implement the Charter's provisions. They must do this two years after ratifying the Charter and every three years thereafter.

However, the Committee began its work in 2001 and as at December 2006, only four countries had submitted their initial reports: Egypt, Mauritius, Rwanda and Nigeria. These are not yet publicly available.

In the meantime, CRIN is compiling mentions of child rights in the reports submitted to the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights, a more general human rights mechanism which monitors the implementation of the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights. These reports are considered by the Commission in public sessions, following which it issues recommendations to the reporting State which are called ‘Concluding Observations’.

Mentions of child rights in the reports will be made available at this link. We have begun with reports submitted for review at the Commission's 42nd Ordinary Session, held from 14-28 November 2007.

Algeria: 3rd and 4th periodic reports

Rwanda: 8th periodic report

Tunisia: 4th - 9th consolidated report
