The Program on Forced Migration and Health at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health is committed to improving the health and well-being of refugees and communities affected by conflict and forced migration. The Program faculty includes experts in the areas of child protection and child survival in crisis settings.

The Program on Forced Migration and Health pursues its mission through:

1. Graduate-level training in public health. Graduate students enrolled in the Program on Forced Migration and Health complete a Master in Public Health (MPH) degree through Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health with a required Certificate in Public Health and Humanitarian Assistance (PHHA) . This two-year course of study offers 13 courses designed specifically for humanitarian workers, taught by experts who have spent years in the field responding to emergencies. Students also complete a 2-month skills-based practicum in a humanitarian setting.

2. Research, advocacy and partnerships. Program faculty lead innovate research projects and participate in global partnerships to improve the health and well-being of refugees and communities affected by conflict and forced migration. A major USAID DCOF funded research initiative on the Care and Protection of Children in Crisis Affected Areas involves a three year, multi-country study to create an evidence base for policy formulation and programmatic intervention to ensure the effective care and protection of children in conflict-affected settings.

3. Support to international organizations. The Program assists United Nations organizations and international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) by offering technical assistance, training and capacity building to improve the quality and efficacy of humanitarian response in complex emergencies.

The Program connects in countless ways with New York City and its extensive health, human rights and humanitarian networks that span the globe.
