BAWLP was founded on July 1991
and registered as non-profit,
voluntary and independent
organisation, whose members are
women from all types of legal
profession - judges (from all levels,
including judges from Supreme
Court, District courts), prosecutors,
lawyers, academics. BAWLP is an organisation with a
membership of 52 members. The
staff are working on a voluntary
basis and consists of: President.
Managing Board (5 members) and a
secretary. BAWLP is a member of the
International Federation of Women
in Legal Careers (IFWLC), which is
based in Paris and has a consultative
status at the UN, UNESCO, UNICEF
and FAO. The aims of the
organisation are: To monitor the
Bulgarian legislation and practice
(judicial and social) concerning
women's and children's rights, to
make proposals for achieving its
compliance with the international
standards in the field, to co-operate
with other NGO's working on
women's and children's rights
protection, education and advocacy
activities. Fields: BAWLP is working
on:
Dissemination of information and
raising the awareness about the
above mentioned standards among
Bulgarian legal practitioners,
governmental institutions and the
general public.
Establishing links between women-
lawyers in Bulgaria and other women
with a legal career from other
countries.
Collecting information related to the
legal, economic and social situation
of women and children in Bulgaria
and other countries.
Promoting proper changes in
Bulgarian legislation in the field of
child protection and children's rights
through studying the international
standards, legislation in the field in
developed European countries, in
particular the legislation in the UK. BAWLP
