SOMALIA: Somali Child Protection and Development Activities in Somalia

Summary: Somali child protection and development
(SOCPD) has been engaged in child protection
activities in Somalia since 1999. Its duties
have ranged from advocacy and lobbying to
the protection of Somali children from child
abuse and violence that has stemmed from
the armed conflict in Somalia.

SOCPD has engaged in child protection in Somalia since 1999. Its duties
have included protection of the rights of children affected by war, child
labour and HIV/AIDS a well as sensitising government on the need to
uphold children's rights in war-torn Somalia.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES OF SOCPD

The overall goal is to protect and promote child rights and achieve better
child survival, development and protection and child participation as future
manpower to replace the aging human resources.

Objectives:

- Advocate for child survival with regards to better child health, nutrition,
water and sanitation

- To advocate for the protection of children in the following areas: child
labour, street children, child soldiers, children with disabilities.

MISSION STATEMENT

SOCPD’s mission is to advocate for the protection of Somali children from
neglect, abuse and exploitation and to empower children with necessary
life skills.

SOCPD has actively participated in a number of child rights activities in
Somalia which have sought to push for the promotion of the rights of
children in this country.
