Summary: Heavy fighting has broken up in Mogadishu since the 20th of February 06. Sixteen children have died and more than ninety has been wounded, including seven babies under the age of two from poor families.
The fighting in Mogadishu is clearly causing further displacement as it coincides with severe drought problems in the country. Hundreds of children in the southern regions of Somalia have already been affected as they face not only water shortages but also food shortages. The groups involved in the fighting do not seem to be aware of the current situation that affects Somali children nor of the drought SOCPD is clearly concerned about the fighting as it exposes an already exausted population in Mogadishu to further unreasonable hardships. SOCPD has requested to both sides to stop fighting to no avail. SOCPD begs the international community to step in to prevent further damage.
