Report from Center for Development and Child Rights

The report is about the fight between the two Somali sub- clans HARTI ABGAL and RER ADAN.

The fight broke out in BIYO ADE village, in the middle of the Shabelle region, in different places and at different times between 10th January 2007 and 6th February 2007.
The weapons used for the fighting included heavy guns, the conflicts caused many injuries and deaths, while some of the wounds were being treated at Shabelle hospital .
However, the death toll is about 18 people, plus 45 injured people, including women and children.

The inhabitants of BIYO ADE village have either been displaced and taken to MIR TAQWO village, which is located in the same area for security reasons, or fled to other areas. If the war continues, a lot more displacements will take place. The problem began with the procurement of livestock and one person was killed on the spot, thus causing the beginning of the conflict. The total number of families that used to live in BIYO ADE village was 894. At the moment, all these families are internally displaced at MIR TAQWO village.

A one-day reconciliation workshop has been held at the CENTER FOR DEVELOPMENT AND CHILD RIGHTS [CDCR]. The meeting was conducted by CDCR and the main objective was the cessation of the hostilities between the fighting parties.

The traditional leader ABGAL Mr iman mohamud iman omar was invited to the meeting and declared that he would welcome any initiative aimed to reach a cease-fire between the two Prather's. He mentioned that one group was reluctant to stop fighting despite his efforts. Notwithstanding the Iman's declaration on the immediate ending of the hostilities, RER ADAN ignored him and started a series of human rights abuses that continue to take place, with both sides still murdering one another .

The current situation of the displaced people involves:

  •  Lack of food. All stocks were burnt down and cropped farms were all eaten up by chattels.
  • Lack of medical attention. At moment, there is a wide spreading of pictorial conjunctives. Most of the people in the village are suffering from this desease.
