[LAHORE, 10 September 2007] - “Corporal punishment not only hurts children physically but emotionally as well,” explains Nadia Gul, Provincial Manager Child Rights Promotion. Corporal punishment continues to be employed as a tool to discipline children in schools around the world. In some schools teachers regularly hit children in an attempt to maintain control within the classroom and to punish the child for poor academic performance. As part of a campaign entitled “Evils of Corporal Punishment,” SPARC (Society for the Protection of the Rights of the Child) is organising different activities about corporal punishment through out September 2007. These activities are taking place in Sindh, NWFP, Punjab and Islamabad. They include: • A one day training course for teachers on the evils of corporal punishment in Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad along with 21 districts of Sindh, Punjab and NWFP. • Talk shows on radio channels to raise awareness about alternatives to corporal punishment. • Stickers against corporal punishment will be distributed in three of the mentioned provinces of Paksitan. • The launch of a letter campaign in which a letter will be sent to the Provincial Education Minister regarding the proper implementation of a corporal punishment ban in the three mentioned provinces of Paksitan.
