NIGERIA: DCI press release on kidnapping

Defence for Children International- Nigeria Section (DCI-Nigeria) does wish to express its dismay and apprehension over the rising spate of kidnapping and abduction of infants and children in Rivers State.

We wish to reiterate that Children are not for use as tools of violence and arm-twisting for selfish and ignoble gains. It is unfortunate and disheartening that this has gone un-checked and keeps repeating itself, without any due attention.

DCI-Nigeria, as an organization working to defend, promote and protect the rights of the Nigerian child, do hereby strongly denounce these violence against our children. We ask that the shameless and cowardly villains be brought to book as soon as is possible.

We are saddened that women organizations, human rights activists and even the wives of Governors of the States in the Niger Delta are yet to spur public demonstrations and call to actions on these kidnappings and abductions of our children.

We therefore call on civil society, community leaders, women organizations, UN and other related agencies, the Ministry of Women Affairs, to join us in protesting against this malevolence in our nation.
