[2 July 2013] - In Kyrgyzstan, 9 out of 10 schools and kindergartens fail to meet structural safety standards as well as maintenance of facilities and utility lines requirements. The data was obtained in course of the study. As it was noted, more than a million of children, 90 percent of those who are enrolled in the school and pre-school institutions in the Kyrgyz Republic, attend unsafe institutions. Most of these buildings should be upgraded through their engineering updates, and need extensive repairs. In some cases, they should be even demolished to build new, safe buildings. And only few organizations meet the safety requirements. Assessment of schools and kindergartens’ safety was carried out by the government, including the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Emergency Situations, the State Agencies for Architecture and Construction, Local self-government and Inter-ethnic relations, with technical support of UNICEF and financing of USAID. In general, there have been assessed 806 kindergartens and 2, 222 schools, including almost 6,700 homes and buildings all over the country.
