IN THE ANNIVERSARY OF NAHAMAN CARMONA´S DEATH,
CASA ALIANZA GUATEMALA CELEBRATES "DAY OF NO VIOLENCE AGAINST
CHILDREN AND TEENAGERS"

Last March 14, 2005, children, teenagers and personnel from Casa Alianza
Guatemala celebrated the fifteenth anniversary of Nahaman Carmona´s
death, who represents a symbol of fight for children and teenagers human
rights who live at the streets and are murdered year after year.

During the 80´s, Nahaman Carmona arrived to Guatemala City together
with his family escaping from El Salvador war. Without a home and a place
to stay, he remained at the cold streets of Guatemala City, where he was
able to know Casa Alianza´s programs. Nevertheless, during a cold night
of March, he was kicked by a group of policemen who found him and
decided to punish him. His crime? He was a street kid. A few days later,
Nahaman Carmona died due to the brutal blows he received.

From that moment on, Nahaman became a symbol of fight for children´s
human rights, and a call to stop violence against children and teenagers.
His case set a historic precedent as the State recognized damages caused
by members of the public security force in their work and accepted
responsibility on the facts.

Fifteen years after Nahaman Carmona´s death, Casa Alianza Guatemala
continues fighting for children´s human rights, such as life, security and
integrity. Nevertheless, fight becomes harder and harder every day, due
to violence suffered in Guatemala and the Central America region. In
Guatemala, statistics show around two murders of children every day.

At this context, last Saturday, March 12, Casa Alianza organized a parade
where children and teenagers participated collocating white ribbons to
vehicles and asking people to join in the defense of life and integrity of
every child, and to declare the anniversary of Nahaman Carmona´s death
as the DAY OF NO VIOLENCE AGAINST CHILDREN AND TEENAGERS.

Casa Alianza is a non profit organization dedicated to the rehabilitation
and defense of children´s human rights, and is a Latin America branch of
Covenant House New York. We need your support to accomplish our job.
