Summary: Gambia is to celebrate World AIDS Day on 1st of December as a public holiday. Marching from Gambia's large street, Serekunda, to Westfield to end in Kairaba Avenue.
As December 1st 2005 fast approaches children around the world prepare once again to bring awareness about HIV and AIDS and its effect on children. Tayam struggles to bring due attention to such a problem and wants to promote respect and sympathy to those children affected by HIV and AIDS, as one of their aims is to mobilise a hundred to five hundred children to take part in HIV and AIDS programmes in schools with non formal education settings. By offering parents, politicans and the media to participate, the opportunity is set to talk about HIV and AIDS with regards to children, and to transfer the discussion from teachers to children so that action can be facilitated in favour of those most affected children. Tayam's target for 2005 is to reach out as many children as possible, let them be adolescents or younger youths, and the sooner the better for in these critical times it is paramount to change attitudes in favour of children affected by HIV and AIDS. This movement has the potential to mobilise great numbers of people so that they can engage in learning and change attitudes by advocating for better Government policies and commitment. This is the main reason for promoting this framework: protection, care and support for children living with HIV and AIDS must be made a priority in Gambia. December 1st theme has been decided to focus on the advocacy of treatment for all children to reach over thousands and thousands of children worldwide, and to make treatment more accessible and plentiful to children.
