The recent initiative of Shabnam Resources, a charitable trust that rehabilitates child labour from the brick kilns of Tiruvallur, near Chennai, is the 'Kids for Birds and Keep Clean Lakes'. This initiative is all about inculcating a wonder about Nature in the children and also making them partners in ecological preservation. The children learn specfically about birds, their migration, their nesting habits, etc. Also, they understand the importance of the small lakes nearby. The kids were taught to clean up the area surrounding the lakes - manually. They collected the trash thrown all around. They were in for a surprise in that they found all sorts of rubbish choking the lakes - like liquor bottles, some of them broken to bits. The children understood that liquor bottles cause injuries if they are not trashed properly. M R Hubert, director of Shabnam Resources, in an appeal to the public, says that he would like to take the children out as often as possible to help them learn about birds like cranes, parrots, doves, ducks, mynahs and other rare species. He would be grateful for contributions from the public to get the children footwear - as they indulge in some tricky business like cleaning up the lake areas. The other needs of the NGO are trash cans and gloves, a handycam to document the birds, and a vehicle to transport the children. He has just found a rented house to keep the kids under a safe roof and is looking for some more comforts for them.
