A radical islamic group known as International Khatme Nabuat Movement
has been attacking the Ahmadiyya community in different parts of
Bangladesh over the past years. In the past, members of the Ahmadiyya
community and some of their mosques were attacked by the members and
supporters of the International Khatme Nobuat Movement in some parts of
the country, including the capital city of Dhaka.

Recently they have attacked the tiny Ahmadiyya community at remote
Shyamnagar area under the Satkhira district. The attack took place
intermitently from 17 April 2005 to 30 April 2005. Women and children
received serious injuries, some women were assaulted and physically
manhandled, even adolescent girls were not spared. Some people were
barred from going to work and Ahmadiyya children were not allowed to
attend school. Some seriously injured persons needed to be transferred to
Dhaka for treatment. Many houses of the Ahmadiyyas were looted and
villagers were threatened of serious consequences if they did not leave
their native village. Leaders of the International Khatme Nabuat Movement
have lodged a false case with the Shyamnagar police station against 48
male members of the local Ahmadiyya community.

Now that the International Khatme Nabuat Movement has declared
another Gherao program on 1 June 2005 to attack the Ahmadiyya
community at Shyamnagar under the Satkhira district of Bangladesh,
tension has grown among the people on the area.

On 22 May 2005 there was a meeting of the International Khatme Nabuat
Movement at Moutala Village of the Kaligonj upazila under the Satkhira
district, in preparation of the Gherao program of 1 June 2005. Moulana
Noorani, the second in command of the International Khatme Nabuat
Movement adressed the meeting.

It is urgently needed to stop further attack on the Ahmadiyyas, their
women and children. It is the moral responsibility of the Government of
Bangladesh to curb violence that takes place in the name of religion. The
government should protect every citizen of the country, particularly the
helpless ethnic minority groups and small religious sects. Under no
circumstances the Government of Bangladesh should allow further attack
on the Ahmadiyya community.

The Bangladesh Development Partnership Centre invites everyone to write
to the Prime Minister of Bangladesh requesting her to ensure appropriate
security to the Ahmadia community, particularly the women and children in
Satkhira district of Bangladesh. The letter can be faxed to Her Excellency to
the fax number or emailed to the email address provided below.
