Upon the recommendation of ECOSOC resolution 2013/34, on 18 December 2013, the General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/68/189 entitled "Model strategies and practical measures on the elimination of violence against children in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice", which requests the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime to convene a meeting of an open-ended intergovernmental expert group to develop a draft set of model strategies and practical measures on the elimination of violence against children in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice, to be considered by the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice at its twenty-third session in May 2014.

The Government of Thailand has offered to host the open-ended intergovernmental expert group meeting (hereinafter "the Meeting"), in Bangkok, Thailand, from 18 to 21 February 2014. The meeting will be held in all official languages of the United Nations (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish).

In order to prepare the ground for the discussions of the meeting, the United Nations Secretariat has prepared a document entitled "Draft set of Model Strategies and Practical Measures on the elimination of violence against children in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice" (hereinafter "the draft Model Strategies"), with the help of a consultant, Professor Yvon Dandurand.

A number of consultations with international experts took place in the course of 2013 to provide the Secretariat with substantive input to "the draft Model Strategies". UNODC has also established an Inter-Agency Advisory Group, composed of representatives from UNODC, UNICEF, OHCHR and the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Violence against Children, which also played a key role in assisting UNODC by sharing its expertise and experience to ensure that "the draft Model Strategies" were developed to the highest possible standards and have the potential to be useful to the various stakeholders.

To facilitate the work of the Meeting, "the draft Model Strategies", as well as relevant documents are available, or will be made available, on this site. Documents will be available at the meeting Venue in limited number. Delegates are therefore kindly requested to bring their own copies of the documents to the meeting.
