International Day for Street Children

Summary: THE INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR STREET CHILDREN IS CELEBRATED EVERY YEAR ON 12 APRIL.

THE DAY PROVIDES A PLATFORM FOR THE MILLIONS OF STREET CHILDREN AROUND THE WORLD - AND THEIR CHAMPIONS - TO SPEAK OUT SO THAT THEIR RIGHTS CANNOT BE IGNORED.

Celebrate with us on April 12th 2013!

Over the last two years, the International Day for Street Children has grown in size and impact, thanks to your support! The day is celebrated across the globe by street children, NGOs, individuals, celebrities, politicians, schools and the private sector.

We wanted to take this opportunity to share some of the plans for this year and let you know how you can support the day - we’d also love to hear what you have planned!

Background

The International Day for Street Children is celebrated every year on April 12th. The day provides a platform for the millions of street children around the world - and their champions - to speak out so that their rights cannot be ignored.

The Consortium for Street Children launched International Day for Street Children in 2011. The day has many high profile supporters including Steven Gerrard, Danny Boyle, John Major and Bianca Jagger.

Theme

The theme of the day this year is Home Street Home – highlighting that for many children across the world, including in the UK, the street is their home.

Visit the International Day for Street Children website for more information and our key messages.

Call to Action

The Consortium for Street Children launched the International Day for Street Children three years ago. We want the United Nations to adopt it.

When the United Nations adopts a day it gives the issue greater global exposure, permanency and increases pressure on governments to act.

This year we are asking supporters to sign our petition to Demand a Day.

How else can you support International Day for Street Children?

    • You can sign our petition (instructions coming soon) and encourage others to do so too.

    • You can use our handy ‘tweet sheet’ and share information through Twitter and Facebook.

    • Do you work with street children? Print out our ‘Demand a Day’ banners and send us a picture! We will share them on our site. You can also use them in your celebrations on the day.
    • If you are holding a celebration event (visit the website for ideas) let us know what you are doing and we will showcase your event on the site. Previous celebratory events include: football tournaments, children’s art competitions, street parades, workshops, film screenings, a balloon release, a record breaking shoe shine and a ‘street kids got talent’ competition.

    • If you want to publicise your event you might find our media guidelines come in handy!

    • If you would like to lobby your local government to do more to support street children, why not take a look at our 2013 advocacy toolkit?

  • If you’re a school teacher take a look at our schools pack, packed with fun activities to raise awareness of street children and the particular challenges they face.

Most important of all, let us know what you’re doing! Send us pictures, info or just say hello at: [email protected]
