ETHIOPIA: 2nd Civil Society Forum on the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child

The 2nd CSO Forum on the ACRWC (the Forum) which will take place from 11‐12 November 2009 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and an event to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the coming into force of the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child.

The Forum aims to contribute to the implementation and monitoring of the ACRWC and to foster closer collaboration among civil society organisations (CSO), the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC) and other stakeholders in the promotion and protection of children’s rights in Africa. This is the second meeting of the Forum.

The Forum enables CSOs to educate, share and learn from one another and to provide recommendations to the ACERWC on various pertinent matters affecting children in Africa.

The agenda will include amongst others: Examination of the roles and responsibilities of the
ACERWC and how CSOs can engage with the Committee; Review of the nomination and selection of Committee members to inform and enable CSOs to better engage with this process; Learning on the 2010 theme of the Day of the African Child (Child budgeting) and input into the review of the ACERWC strategic plan of action.

The Forum will also be organising an event to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the coming
into force of the ACRWC which will take place on the 13th of November 2009 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. This event will bring together a number of CSOs, activists, and academics working on
children’s rights to celebrate the above mentioned anniversary while examining the progress
made and remaining challenges for the effective realisation of the rights and well‐being of
children in Africa.

During the three days, a number of eminent and distinguished personalities and speakers in the
child rights field will enlighten participants on the status of children’s rights in Africa.
