UNESCO and UNICEF are convening a high-level discussion in Brussels to promote a bold new agenda for education and build support for its inclusion as a central pillar in the post-2015 development framework.
The shared vision for education stems from the 2014 Muscat Agreement, in which education leaders pledged to galvanize international support behind the overarching goal to "ensure equitable and inclusive quality education and lifelong learning for all by 2030". Education leaders also recommended seven global targets to translate this aspiration into action.
Through the event, UNESCO and UNICEF aim to:
- Rally the international community behind an aspirational goal for education and a set of clear targets that will drive measurable improvements in equity, quality and learning;
- Reaffirm with world leaders the importance of education as a fundamental human right and one of the most powerful levers for sustainable development and peace; and
- Mobilize education champions to create the political and financial will needed to deliver the education agenda.
The event forms part of the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) Replenishment Conference in Brussels on June 25-26, hosted by the European Union and aimed at ensuring sufficient and sustainable financing for education in GPE partner countries.
