Tuvalu

An island nation in the Pacific Ocean, Tuvalu is notable for having the third smallest population and the fourth smallest territory of any sovereign State in the world. After independence from Britain in 1974, Tuvalu has operated a parliamentary democracy with an appointed representative of the British Crown as ceremonial head of state and an elected prime minister as head of government. While it has been acknowledged that Tuvalu’s capacity for promoting and reporting on rights is limited, it has been advised to ensure that it ratifies all core UN human rights treaties and to focus on the abolition of corporal punishment in all settings.
