A former British protectorate situated in Oceania, the Solomon Islands have only recently emerged from the decades-long civil war. One of the Pacific’s poorest countries, it has been hit by the global food, fuel and financial crises, though it is trying to salvage its economy through gold mining. Children’s rights violations include violence towards girls, a very low minimum age of criminal responsibility, child labour, and corporal punishment in the home and in schools.
