An overseas French department on the North Atlantic coast of South America, French Guyana borders Suriname and Brazil. An integral part of the French state, the governance of the territory is handled by an appointed Prefect and an elected executive - it also dispatches representatives to the French National Assembly and Senate. Treatment of illegal immigrants, including children, from surrounding territories are a continuing issue for French Guiana, including the lack of an appeals process or recourse to the courts before deportation into potentially threatening circumstances.
