An archipelago located in the South Atlantic, the Falkland Islands (also sometimes known as the Islas Malvinas) are a largely self governing British Overseas Territory. The United Kingdom, significantly stepped up its presence on the Islands after removing an Argentinian occupation force in 1982 and re-affirming British sovereignty - though territorial claims to the Islands and their surrounding waters remains a source of tension. As non-independent territory with a very small population, the Falklands currently have no specific reports of significant human rights abuses.
