British Indian Ocean Territory [United Kingdom]

An overseas territory of the United Kingdom, the British Indian Ocean Territory, or Chagos Islands, are situated in the Indian Ocean, between Africa and Indonesia. In the 1960s two thousand islanders were displaced to allow the British to lease the largest island as a military base for the United States. Former Islanders have been involved in extensive litigation in British courts to assert their right to return to the islands, particularly over the last two decades.
