The event, organised by Save the Children Sweden, on behalf of the International Save the Children Alliance, will draw more than 30 partner organisation representatives from 15 countries in Southeast Asia and the Pacific. The workshop will focus on strengthening advocacy efforts and other initiatives to urge governments and states in the region to respond to the study’s recommendations. These will include strategic actions such as legal reforms for ending corporal punishment of children in all contexts, and the creation of more effective national child protection systems. Dr Joan Durrant, Associate Professor of Family Social Sciences from the University of Manitoba, Canada, will discuss ‘Positive discipline: what it is and how to do it’. The workshop will allow participants to review rationales and models to strengthen work with men and boys in addressing gender-discrimination and inequalities. This workshop is the sixth in a series of capacity building and strategic planning events, beginning in 2003, which aim to strengthen the interventions of Save the Children and partner organisations in Southeast Asia and the Pacific regarding the elimination of all violence against children. The events also aim to support governments and relevant organisations in confronting challenges, emphasising their responsibilities in addressing corporal punishment as a severe violation of children’s rights.
