INTER-AMERICAN COMMISSION: 133rd Session

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) will hold its 133rd session in Washington, D.C., from 15-31 October 2008. During the sessions, the IACHR will analyse petitions, cases and precautionary measures, as well as thematic and general reports on human rights.

Hearings which will include reports on child rights include:

USA: Case 12.626 – Jessica Gonzales, United States, brought by the Human Rights Institute, Columbia Law School (22 October)
This case relates to the human rights violations of a domestic violence victim and her children by the State and police department, specifically the rights to life, non-discrimination, family life/unity, due process, and the right s of domestic violence victims and their children to special protections. The hearing will include the presentation of a child rights amicus brief.

Argentina: Situation of persons – including children - deprived of their liberty in prisons and mental hospitals in Argentina, presented by the Grupo de Mujeres de la Argentina - Foro de VIH Mujeres y Familia (27 October)

Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay: Situation of children deprived of their liberty, presented by: the Colectivo de Derechos de Infancia y Adolescencia - Argentina / Associação Nacional dos Centros de Defesa da Criança e do Adolescene (ANCED) Brazil / Coordinadora por los Derechos de la Infancia y la Adolescencia (CDIA) Paraguay / Comité de los Derechos del Niño – Uruguay (28 October)
