The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) opened its 124th regular session on Wednesday. The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, the Chair of the Permanent Council, Ambassador Sonia Johnny of Saint Lucia, and the President of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, Evelio Fernández Arévalos, opened the proceedings. During the three-week session, the Commission heard individual cases and petitions pertaining to different countries in the hemisphere, which are in the stages prior to recommendation to the Inter-American Court of Human Rights. It also heard cases that may require precautionary and provisionary measures on urgent situations. The Commission held more than 60 hearings on cases and petitions, and heard from different individuals, organisations and representatives from Member States who presented information on the human rights situation in the hemisphere.
