Identifying and Preventing Abuse of Children with Mental Disabilities in Institutions

For the last year, partners have conducted human rights monitoring in 30 institutions for children with mental disabilities in four European countries, with co-funding from the European Commission.

Despite the commitment of States to deinstitutionalise people with disabilities, children continue to be placed in residential settings – placing them at increased risk of abuse and lifelong segregation.

We will share preliminary findings of this project, and consider how the CRPD can be used as a tool for preventing abuse. We will also share our monitoring methods.

You are warmly invited to join us for the discussion

Speakers:

  • Chair (TBC)
  • Sára Pásztor – The forms and extent of abuse in institutional settings for children with disabilities in Europe: monitoring findings from Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary and the UK.
  • Sándor Gurbai – Characteristics of institutionalisation and effects on childhood development.
  • Steven Allen – Independent monitoring by civil society.

Presentations will last for 20mins. Following this, discussion is warmly invited.

The event will have live captioning. Light refreshments will also be provided.
