Council of Europe: International panel debate on corporal punishment of children

Advocates against the corporal punishment of children will take stock of how far the smacking debate has come since Sweden banned corporal punishment 30 years ago, becoming the first country to forbid all forms of violence against children, including at home.

The event will be held in the Committee of Ministers’ meeting room, the panel debate, open to the press, in Strasbourg on Tuesday 27 April from 1.30 to 2.30 p.m. is organised by the Council of Europe in co-operation with the NGO Save the Children Sweden.

 

The debate will be preceded by a 1 p.m. opening of an exhibition "Eliminating corporal punishment of children in Europe" by Ms Maud de Boer Buquicchio, Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe. The exhibit will feature large-scale panels of people who have signed a petition to ban corporal punishment of children across Europe.
