Equity for Children will host the U.S. launch of the latest findings from Young Lives, the University of Oxford program’s longitudinal study of childhood poverty, which will be followed by an active panel discussion with top speakers from UNICEF, UNDP and the NYC housing and community project, Comunilife. The Young Lives team will share their perspectives on how best to strengthen policies that help children living in poverty based on the evidence from four stages of the Young Lives study and in view of sociopolitical trends and challenges.
This year’s 25th anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child sets the stage for celebration and critical reflection: What does it mean for children to grow up in unequal societies and poverty? How are children’s lives changing at the beginning of the 21st century? And what interventions and policies have the potential to fulfill their rights and to leave no child behind? The lives of 12,000 children in four countries – Ethiopia, India, Peru and Vietnam – are being followed in an exceptional endeavor over 15 years to find answers to these questions. Oxford’s international “Young Lives” study on childhood poverty is uniquely positioned to contribute to a stronger understanding of contemporary inequalities and their impact on children.
