Summary: The fifth session of the Forum will discuss the Millennium Development Goals and its impact on indigenous peoples. Young people are encouraged to participate and make their voices heard.
The UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues is an advisory body to the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), with a mandate to discuss indigenous issues related to economic and social development, culture, the environment, education, health and human rights. The Forum meets annually for 10 day sessions, drawing wide participation each year. The theme of the fifth session of the Permanent Forum is: the Millennium Development Goals and indigenous peoples: Re-defining the Millennium Development Goals. States, UN bodies and NGOs in consultative status with the Council may participate in the work of the Forum as observers. ECOSOC also decided that organisations of indigenous people may equally participate as observers in the work of the Permanent Forum in accordance with the procedures which have been applied in the Working Group on Indigenous Populations of the Subcommission on the Promotion of Human Rights.
