Situated in the South Atlantic Ocean, this British Overseas Territory is one of the most isolated islands in the world, lying midway between Africa and South America. The island remained uninhabited until it was initially colonised by the Portuguese in the 16th century. Since then it has become a way station for seafarers, but many of its residents have left the island in recent decades in search of better economic opportunities. Human rights violations include overcrowding in prisons and discrimination faced by the LGBT community.
