Kosovo

A landlocked territory, Kosovo is bordered by Macedonia, Albania, Montenegro and, along a disputed line of demarcation, Serbia. Administered by the United Nations after the 1999 war between Serbian forces and KLA secessionists, Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008 - a decision that has attracted only partial international recognition - and has since held elections for an national government. The major human rights issues in Kosovo are the continuing legacy of the war, including internally displaced peoples, and tensions between different ethnic groups - particularly between ethnic Albanians and the remaining Serb populations, but also in the form of discrimination and prejudice against Roma and other minorities.
