Chile

Chile stretches more than 4,000 kilometres along the west coast of South America and has terrain that varies from deserts to glaciers. The State emerged from the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet in 1990, then underwent political and constitutional reform to become the fastest-growing economy in Latin America throughout the 1990s. The State continues to address historical human rights abuses, including the extrajudicial executions and enforced disappearances of the military dictatorship, but has been criticised for the imposition of lenient sentences for serious human rights abuses.
