An autonomous territory of the Netherlands, Aruba is located to the north of South America’s Caribbean coast. Though independence has been discussed in the country, the island separated from the Netherlands Antilles in the 1986, the Netherlands continues to control defence and foreign affairs, while local government is handled at the island level. Human rights mechanisms have been critical of the ongoing legality and practice of corporal punishment of children in the State.
