SURINAME: Access to justice for children

This report is part of CRIN's access to justice for children project, looking at the status of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) in national law, the status of children involved in legal proceedings, the legal means to challenge violations of children’s rights and the practical considerations involved in challenging violations.

The CRC has the force of law in Suriname, but it has not been cited by the national courts. The age of majority in Suriname is 21 years and all persons under that age need the assistance of a representative to bring a case. Legal aid is available subject to a means test and there are a few organisations providing legal assistance on a pro bono basis. Petitions by individuals regarding human rights violations may also be submitted to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.
