This report seeks to boarden our understanding of
how, in Britain today, some of the most vulnerable
children continueto be involved in prostitution.
In addtion to examining current attitudes and
legislative responses, the report conveys the
reality of extreme abuse and offers the reader a
clear picture of the level of control and coercion
imposed on children by adults. It demonstrates
how the legislative framework, combined with
public attitudes not only fails to protect vulnerable
children but enables perpetrators to justify their
abuse. Labelling children as "common prostitutes"
continutes to confirm the popular misconception of
the less deserving victim, even the undeserving
victim, which perpetuates and expnerates this form
of child abuse.
Whose Daughter Next? keeps this issue firmly on
the UK public agenda and challenges attitudes
towards children abused through prostitution. The
report stresses the need to have the most effective
legal remedies to pursue abuse and coercive adults.
However, the real problem appears to lie in the
attitudes which underpin the current legal
response, rather than with the law itself. It is here
that the most fundamental changes are required.
