Matter of Social Context.... The Sexual Abuse of Children with Disabilities

Preface from the report

This report is released as part of Radda Barnen's effort to raise
awareness regarding the sexual exploitation of children with
disabilities. This is an important issue. We want to acknowledge
and share the fact that the sexual abuse of children with
disabilities exists.

It is important to point out that sexual abuse is not an isolated
issue, but rather a part of a complex situation where many
factors contribute to the abuse. Consequently, there are no
simple solutions to the problem.

Article 34 in the Convention on the Rights of the Child states that
"State Parties undertake to protect the child from all forms of
sexual exploitation and sexual abuse". This is valid for all girls
and boys, including those with disabilities. Therefore, it is
important to include these children in all activities related to the
analysis of the prevalence, prevention, detection and support
strategies relating to sexually abused children and their families.

The ideas and attitudes found in this report are based on the
views expressed by the different authors and are not necessarily
the views of Radda Barnen. However, with this report Radda
Barnen would like to stimulate a debate on sexual abuse of
children with disabilities -within the family, neighbourhood,
working place or country.
