HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL: Resolution on the Rights of the Child

This year's resolution, submitted by the Czech Republic and Uruguay, was adopted earlier this week. The subject is: The implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Optional Protocols thereto.

The resolution reflects the fact that this year sees the 20th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The resolution also reiterates the sponsors' concern about the delay in appointing a Special Representative to the Secretary General on Violence Against Children.

The secret appointment process has, according to rumour, been active for at least a year. It is more than two years since the UN Study on Violence Against Children concluded that such an appointment should be made.

There have now been at least two UN resolutions, democratically adopted at world human rights forums, and one petition, signed by more than 1,000 NGOs, calling on the Secretary General to make the appointment.
