GLOBAL: Children and young people in care – Discover your rights!

On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, the Council of Europe and SOS Children’s Villages International finalised a youth-friendly information booklet addressed to children and young people in alternative care.

Through comics, stories and informative texts, children and young people in care can learn about their rights, as set forth by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, the Council of Europe Recommendation Rec(2005)5 on the rights of children living in residential institutions (www.coe.int/familypolicy) and the Quality4Children Standards for Out-of-Home Child Care in Europe (www.quality4children.info).

The booklet was developed together by adults and young people with care experience and should help children and young people in care to learn about their rights, how to exercise them and how to take on an active role in their own care process.

The English version of the booklet Children and young people in care – Discover your rights! can be downloaded free of charge at www.coe.int/children, the website of the Council of Europe’s child rights programme “Building a Europe for and with children”. A Russian version is currently being finalised.

The Council of Europe and SOS Children's Villages call all stakeholders in alternative care to support the translation of the booklet in national languages and its best use by children and young people in care.
