Pre-PrepCom workshop for children and young people
January 26 to 27, 2001
New York, USA
Dear friends and colleagues,
As you know, the second preparatory meeting (PrepCom) will be
taking place in New York from 29 January – 2 February 2001 to
plan for the UN General Assembly Special Session on Children the
following September.
Save the Children is committed to working with partner
organisations to co-ordinate children and young people’s
participation in all processes leading up to the Special Session
and in the Special Session itself and, to ensuring that those
children and young people who participate at whatever level are
properly briefed and prepared to make a meaningful contribution.
Given that there will be different groups of children and young
people participating in the 2nd PrepCom, Save the Children feels
it is important that a space is provided for all these children and
young people to come together, with the support and assistance
of adult facilitators, prior to the start of the 2nd PrepCom so that
they can meet each other, exchange experiences and jointly plan
their activities during and around the 2nd PrepCom.
Save the Children is therefore organising a 2-day Pre-PrepCom
Workshop for all children and young people attending the 2nd
PrepCom. Save the Children is prepared to lead this process in
partnership with other like-minded agencies and organisations
who share these objectives.
The workshop will have the overarching aim of making the
participation of children and young people in the 2nd PrepCom a
positive and high quality experience for all involved.
The workshop will also aim to:
§ Ensure that all young participants are properly briefed
and prepared to make a meaningful contribution.
§ Ensure that children and young people with direct
experience of the issues under discussion are able to input their
views and perspectives at the international level and, in turn to
feed back discussions at international level to the field.
§ Ensure a support network for the children and young
people, especially to assist those who are entering into new
contexts and situations through their participation in such events.
§ Begin a process of changing attitudes towards children
and young people’s participation and to increase understanding
of their role in these discussions and fora.
§ Provide a space for children and young people to
exchange their experiences and plan together their activities
during and around these events.
§ To learn from this experience in order to enrich future
initiatives.
In brief, the workshop will provide an opportunity for:
§ A briefing on all aspects of the PrepCom process.
§ A discussion of the summary report by children and
young people on the paper entitled ‘A World Fit for Children’.
§ A presentation and discussion of the work of the Youth
Advisory Group.
§ Selection of a youth spokesperson and youth
convenors for the Orientation and Consultation Session
organised by the NGO Committee on UNICEF on 28 January.
§ A discussion on ideas for children and young people’s
participation in the Special Session itself.
The workshop will take place in a venue close to the UN building
in New York. Please note that Save the Children is prepared to
organise the workshop but is unable to cover the travel and
accommodation costs for participants.
This announcement is a "call" to all governments, agencies and
organisations who are including children and young people in
their delegations to the 2nd PrepCom to invite their young
delegates to also participate in this pre-PrepCom workshop on
26-27 January.
In order to make all necessary preparations for this workshop,
Save the Children asks you to confirm the participation of young
delegates in this pre-PrepCom workshop by 15 January 2001 at
the latest by returning the
