CHILDREN IN CARE: Sweet 16? The Age of Leaving Care in Scotland

Summary: This report examines the law, policy and practice on the age of leaving care for young people in Scotland. The Commissioner was shocked to learn that young people were still expected to leave care at 16 or 17 when they are not ready to face the challenges this presents. Scottish law and policy strongly advises that young people should be encouraged and supported to stay in care until 18 years of age when their welfare requires it. This report explores the reasons why young people are still being pushed out of the care system before they are ready.Owner: Scotland's Commissioner for Children and Young Peoplepdf: http://www.sccyp.org.uk/webpages/Leaving_Care_Report_for_Web_20080325.pdf
