CHILD SOLDIERS: Suffer the Children: The psychosocial rehabilitation of child soldiers as a function of peace building

Following a brief overview of the child soldier phenomenon, it is suggested that current models for the demobilisation, rehabilitation and reintegration of child soldiers (DDR) would benefit from viewing DDR as a community process. A theoretical framework is proposed which sees each child as very much embedded in their social, cultural, economic and political situation – i.e. a ‘child-in-environment’ perspective. Such an ecological perspective not only suggests that children’s strengths should be taken into account, but also that the situation faced by children involved in armed conflict can only be understood within the context of the larger systems within which they operate.
