UPDATE FOR CRIN WEBSITE ON 2ND PREPCOM ~ PARTICIPATION

Around 100 children and young people attended the 2nd
PrepCom, compared to approximately 15 at the 1st PrepCom in
June 2000. Some, including children from Canada, Jamaica, the
Netherlands, Sweden, Uganda and Venezuela were members of
their government delegation; the majority were members of NGO
delegations from Asia, Africa, Europe, Latin America, the Middle
East and North America.

Children and young people participated in a meaningful and
constructive way and their views and opinions permeated all
levels of the PrepCom. For example, through:
- the NGO consultation day
- NGO briefings
- oral interventions in the formal proceedings by young delegates
from both government and NGO delegations
- NGO caucuses
- other workshops and side events (for example, Children and
Armed Conflict, Evaluating Youth Participation)
- a meeting with the members of the Bureau and the 6 initiating
countries
- the presentation of the GMC
- government delegations.

In addition, two young representatives were elected onto the Co-
ordinating Committee of the Child Rights Caucus.

At a two-day pre-PrepCom workshop organised by Save the
Children, around 50 children and young people from 26 countries
discussed the draft Outcome document ‘A World Fit for Children’.
On the basis of these discussions, they identified what they
thought are the key regional and global issues facing children
and young people. These key issues were presented to the 2nd
PrepCom in several of the interventions mentioned above. A
document of key messages has been produced as a result of
these discussions and is available in English
