UNIVERSAL PERIODIC REVIEW (UPR): Schedule for 2nd cycle announced

Summary: The schedule for the 2nd cycle of reviews has been released, with the first set of States due to be reviewed at the Human Rights Council in June 2012.

Second Cycle of the UPR

With the first cycle of the UPR due to be completed in October this year, next year sees the start of the 2nd cycle. States will be questioned both on the steps they have taken to implement the recommendations made to them during their first review, and on situations concerning human rights that have taken place in the 4 years since their initial review.

Changes to the UPR

The Human Rights Council Review has led to some changes in the UPR process, with 14 States being reviewed per session for the 2nd cycle as opposed to 16 States first time around.

CRIN will release more information on the 2nd cycle as soon as it becomes available.
