UNITED KINGDOM: Government U-turn on sex education

The Children’s Rights Alliance for England has today (19 Feb 2010) written to the Joint Committee on Human Rights regarding a recent Government amendment to the Children, Schools and Families Bill.

In a letter from its national co-ordinator, the Alliance says the amendment could undermine sex and relationships education for all children attending faith schools, and lead to “discriminatory teaching” for certain groups of children. It urges the Committee to scrutinise the Bill again in light of this new amendment.

The letter comes after today’s publication of the Committee’s review of the Bill. The Committee criticises provisions in the Bill allowing parental withdrawal from sex and relationships education until a child reaches 15, and outlines the risk of rights violations in allowing sex and relationships education to be delivered in a way that is appropriate to the religious and cultural backgrounds of school students. The Alliance says this new amendment could make matters much worse.
